Trump’s path to dictatorship is clear

This is Dispatches with Patrick Cockburn, a subscriber-only newsletter from The i Paper. If you’d like to get this direct to your inbox, every single week, you can sign up here.

When Saddam Hussein ruled in Baghdad, Iraqis who spread out their newspaper to read on a café table were careful not to spill any of their coffee on the front page which invariably carried a picture of the Iraqi leader. They feared that such an accident might be misinterpreted by omnipresent informers as a sign of disrespect or even opposition to Saddam, with dire consequences for themselves.

Fast-forward to the US today, where the US administration this week secured an indictment against the former head of the FBI, James B Comey, against whom Donald Trump has long pursued a vendetta in revenge for Comey investigating him for illicit links to Russia. Comey is charged with threatening the life of the President and transmitting that threat across state lines.

Even by Iraqi judicial standards, evidence for the alleged assassination threat is far-fetched, based as it is on a photograph Comey took when he was on holiday on the North Carolina coast. His picture showed seashells on a beach arranged in the shape of the numbers “86 47”. When he posted the picture online, the administration claimed that “86” is a code for killing or eliminating someone, in this case Trump, who is the 47th President of the US. In other words, the charge is that Comey was knowingly calling on somebody to assassinate the President.

In reality, “86” is a short hand commonly used by staff in restaurants, bars and hotels in the US to indicate that a customer is not to be served, most usually because he or she is unruly. Whoever arranged the seashells on that North Carolina beach, conceivably somebody in the hospitality business, may simply have meant that Trump was an unwelcome customer.

Saddam’s Iraq was sometimes called “the Republic of Fear”, a title earned by its merciless repression of real or imaginary opponents. Its defenders claimed that only a dictatorship unrestrained by law could hold together a much-divided country with a powerful tradition of violence. But the US has no such excuse as, on the 250th anniversary of America establishing a republic based on fundamental rights, Trump appears to ignore or manipulate the law underpinning those rights in the course of establishing his arbitrary rule.

Grotesquely excessive punishment for minor or fictional dissent – such as a coffee stain on the leader’s image or an arrangement of seashells on a beach – may appear bizarre, but they are important in stoking a feeling of dread. The message sent is that nobody is safe, however trivial or non-existent their offence.

Trump has his predecessors in the fascist dictators of Europe and the caudillos – strongmen – of South America. Yet the accelerated speed with which the USA is ceasing to be a lawbound society is astonishing. The nearest parallel I have witnessed was in Turkey after the abortive coup in 2016, when Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan took advantage of the crisis to bring under control all judicial, military and media power centres. In a sort of coup d’etat from above, Turkey turned into an autocracy in which courts routinely jail the opposition. Much the same is now happening in the US, leaving the rest of the world shell-shocked, unable to respond adequately to the destruction of American democracy.

European leaders consider themselves rather daring in periodically criticising US actions, but their punches are invariably pulled so their pathetic bleats of dissent come across as confessions of weakness rather than assertions of strength. To drive this impression home, the White House doubles down in its contemptuous abuse.

Sir Keir Starmer boasts of keeping Britain out of the Iran war and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says that the US is being “humiliated” by Tehran. But a measure of their feebleness is that they see nothing strange in their inability to affect the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, much though it impacts the vital interests of Britain and Germany. Their excuse is that they need American support against Russia in Ukraine, but the Russian army has not advanced significantly in four years. A more plausible reason is simply that they are running scared of Trump and an America they no longer know how to cope with.

While Europe dithers, holding embarrassingly pointless meetings about the Ukraine and Gulf wars, the rules-based global order is shuffling towards the exit. Always biased towards the US and the West, it still, if spasmodically and hypocritically, restrained unbridled and violent competition between nation states.

The shattered remains of that order are all around us, signs of the destructive energy Trump has put into abolishing it. One of the most striking features of this is the American campaign against the judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in retaliation for them issuing an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defence minister, Yoav Gallant, for war crimes in Gaza.

Kimberly Prost, a Canadian ICC judge targeted by Washington because of a shelved ICC investigation into the actions of US soldiers in Afghanistan, described to The New York Times how sanctions had affected her daily life. “You lose immediate access to all the main credit cards that go through the Swift system, which is controlled by the US,” she said. “My Amazon and Google accounts were closed. You cannot pay for your utilities, your subscriptions. You’re completely crippled when it comes to booking hotels, trains, flights. You can’t buy dollars because your name is flagged.”

Trump seems to relish such persecution. But he is the symptom as well as the cause of the shift towards a crueller, less co-operative world, as international support ebbs for human and democratic rights and for aid to countries facing famine and destitution or devastated by natural disaster. Such humanitarianism was biased towards American and Western interests, but the benefits were real.

To a degree seldom appreciated, this concern for the political, social and economic health of other countries was not altruistic but an outcome of the Cold War. The confrontation between communism and capitalism, the blocs headed by the US and the Soviet Union, was fought out on many fronts from Bolivia to Cambodia.

Aid was weaponised, as was human rights, focusing much on evil-doing in rival states, but unavoidably also establishing standards of international morality. A strong motivator for the granting of civil rights for black Americans in the 1950s and 1960s was Washington’s knowledge that racial discrimination in the US damaged it in its competition with the Soviet Union. An attitude of shocked concern at the failings of the other side might have been hypocritical, but it was also beneficial.

No such rivalry exists today. Vladimir Putin’s Russia does not, for very good reasons, present Russia as a role model for the rest of the world. China seeks international influence, but is a strong supporter of a status quo it so successfully exploits.

Reports exposing torture and mass detention by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, both estimable organisations, are increasingly seen as radicalising threats to an established order – whose zeitgeist is force and fear.

Further thoughts

Official visits are an exasperating time for resident diplomats and foreign correspondents. The causes of their anxiety differ but are interrelated. Diplomats worry because they know that all their hard work arranging the visit of some dignitary will be taken for granted by the media and their bosses back home, but any snafu will be front-page news.

During the King’s visit to Washington, this happened when the UK ambassador, Sir Christian Turner, had his commonsensical remarks to sixth-formers in February about the US and UK leaked. Curiously, nobody seems to criticise the sixth-former who secretly recorded a private conversation and passed it on to the press. Blips like this get maximum publicity because official visits are dull affairs, and the press reporting them pounce on anything vaguely newsworthy and give it top billing.

Official events involving Donald Trump are easier for journalists and more difficult for diplomats because invariably the President says or does something undiplomatic and outrageous so as to dominate the daily news agenda.

He never tires of throwing these verbal firecrackers into some banal press conference with a tight-lipped foreign leader. Notorious examples include the visit of the Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi  to the White House in March, during which he compared the surprise US-Israeli attack on Iran the previous month with Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbour. Another was his public row with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Diplomats take these upsets too seriously, but they are gold to journalists, who are otherwise reduced to making bricks without straw by hyping carefully scripted exchanges of amity and common purpose. Press packs accompanying the visiting dignitary usually bond to a degree with him or her, while resident foreign correspondents grind their teeth when they see something that has been said a dozen times being hailed as a breakthrough – though they have no option but to go along with the fiction.

Beneath the Radar

In Iraq and Afghanistan, the US army never found a way of combating mines planted by insurgents in or beside the roads. Detonated mostly by a command wire, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were deadly and unavoidable.

Analysis by the Military Times shows that of the 5,413 US soldiers killed in operations in the Iraqi and Afghan wars, some 2,614 of whom were killed by IEDs, 52 per cent of all US military fatalities in Iraq and 48 per cent in Afghanistan. Many died when travelling in vulnerable military vehicles. The Pentagon spent some $40bn trying to develop an armoured vehicle which could survive an IED explosion, but never succeeded in doing so.

What the IED was to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the drone and short-range missile is to the US-Israeli war against Iran. Americans and Israelis have total superiority in sophisticated weaponry, the US launching 13,000 air strikes on Iranian targets in five-and-a-half weeks against limited air defence. Trump and his weird Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, boasted of destroying Iran as a military power. “Never in recorded history has a nation’s military been so quickly and effectively neutralised,” said Hegseth absurdly, ignoring the fact that Iran shows no sign of being defeated.

Yet, as in Iraq and Afghanistan, what has frustrated the US military are cheap mass-produced weapons – mostly drone – against which the Pentagon has once again had no effective antidote. Trump and Hegseth rant about their splendid victory, while the Strait of Hormuz remains shut and US Arab allies on the south side of the Gulf know their oil facilities and desalination plants may be blown up in any renewed war.

Why has this happened? The Pentagon and the US defence industry has never been interested in cheap mass-produced weapons, simply because they are inexpensive and easily made, reducing the profits of the manufacturers.

And all this was readily foreseeable: Iran was specialised in drone and short-range missiles as far back as 2005. By 2019, Western experts were describing Iran as “a drone superpower” after it hit Saudi oil facilities, briefly cutting the Kingdom’s oil production in half in a surprise drone and missile strike in 2019.

A measure of the extensive damage caused by drones and missiles in the Gulf oil states is the savage punishment meted out to those who film it on their phones. In Bahrain, for instance, 25 people have just been convicted of “supporting and endorsing Iranian terrorist attacks” by filming them. Where destruction is undeniable, Gulf governments prefer to pretend it was caused by debris from missiles that had been shot down, though closer investigation often showed this not to be the case.

Cockburn’s Picks

The King’s visit to Washington and the interplay of journalists and diplomats prompted me to look again at Caviar & Cornflakes, hilarious film made by Richard Denton for the BBC focusing on myself, as a foreign correspondent in Moscow, together with the British press attaché, Donald MacLaren, in the days after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The British embassy and the Foreign office took much unnecessary umbrage at the film, but it has worn well as a portrait of journalistic and diplomatic life at the time.

The hidden health lessons in Star Wars, according to a GP

Monday 4 May is not only a bank holiday in the UK, but also holds a second, rather special meaning: yes, it’s Star Wars Day. May the 4th is an unofficial celebration, with fans globally marking the incredible three trilogies and spin-off movies, greeting each other with “May the Fourth be with you”.

Of course, this is based on the famous phrase “may the Force be with you”, an encouraging and motivational sentiment conveying protection, courage and hope that the Force – a metaphysical energy field that binds the galaxy together and is created by all living things – will overcome any challenge. Each character also has their own midi-chlorian count, which dictates their ability to connect with and use the Force.

What has this got to do with health and wellbeing, you might ask? Well, Star Wars has always resonated with me due to its themes strongly related to the importance of the relationships in our lives and their impact on our wellbeing. The films touch on redemption, the challenge of self-centered attachment as opposed to unconditional love, how to maintain boundaries, and how complex connection can be. It teaches us about the importance of having a variety of different kinds of relationships – siblings, parental, intergenerational, friendships – and our relationship with ourselves.

Scientific research echos the importance of connection and relationships for our wellbeing. Science shows that strong social connections are better predictors of living longer, being happier and healthier than perhaps even our genetics. Healthy relationships lower cortisol levels, reducing chronic inflammation and stress; improve our immunity and heart health by lowering reactivity to stress; and also boost our mental health. In contrast, sadly, challenging or unhealthy relationships do the opposite – leading to a higher risk of anxiety and low mood, problems sleeping, high blood pressure, and increased feelings of loneliness and low self-esteem.

Relationships are perhaps like the Force, offering us protection against difficulties in life. In which case, how can we increase our own midi-chlorian level and tune into this amazing friendship energy field? We need to prioritise our social connections and learn how to nurture them.

Siblings

Think about Luke Skywalker and General Leia Organa, brother and sister, who have a silent understanding and provide comfort to one another during challenging times. Research has shown that having positive sibling connection results in lower levels of depression, better sleep, and a more optimistic attitude. Sibling relationships can change quite a lot over time as we ourselves change. A key pitfall to avoid is parental influence.

Parents sometimes favour one child over the other, they may encourage narratives about a presumed “hierarchy” between siblings, and they may also place certain children in the middle of familial conflict. Be honest about how this has felt, if it is true, and have an honest conversation with your sibling, calling it out and making an agreement to not let it divide you. Another pitfall is not to let time, distance or life events stop you meeting up, spending time together, and understanding who you both are now. And thirdly, treat them as a friend and not just as your sibling; they might be genetically linked to you, but that doesn’t mean they will always be around, so treat them with the respect and kindness you would a friend.

Parent

Not all parent-child relationships are conflict-free, and so it goes with Luke and Anakin Skywalker, who later becomes Sith Lord Darth Vader when he embraces the Dark Side.

Global research has consistently shown that the relationship we have with our parents is a strong predictor of our wellbeing as an adult, including our mental health. If you are a parent, don’t make the mistake of continuing to treat your child as a child even when they are an adult. Recognise how roles and identities change over time, and move with the times.

If you have a difficult relationship with your parent, take some time to be honest about what is wrong, and why; take responsibility for your part in this. Clear communication is key: give up blame and ultimately remember that no parent is perfect. They just try to do their best.

Friends

What friendship is more legendary than that of Han Solo and Chewbacca – two completely different entities who are able to create a lifelong friendship built on respect and loyalty. Science tells us that those of us who have strong meaningful friendships have increased life satisfaction, faster healing from illness, less anxiety, and a 50 per cent lower risk of dying early; an especially strong link if we have five or more close friends.

How can we prioritise our friendships? Firstly, we must ensure that when life gets busy, we don’t cancel plans; it is tempting to treat socialising as a luxury, but it isn’t – the benefits we get from our friends come from regular, meaningful interaction. Secondly, be open to meeting new friends and to letting go of old ones; we all change with time. Our friends need to match who we are now and who we are becoming. And lastly, we need to do things with our friends, however small and simple: research shows when we have shared experiences or create memories together, we develop a stronger bond.

Intergenerational

Think Yoda or Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker: do you have an older, wise mentor who you turn to in times of trouble? Research says you should, and the benefits are not just one-way.

Intergenerational relationships, typically an age difference of 10-15 years difference, improve wellbeing for both parties; older adults have reduced loneliness, and younger people have improved self-esteem and emotional resilience. Find a mentor in your life who has “been there and done that”, be open to talking to new people of all ages and really listening to the life lessons they have learned.

Make the most of every opportunity to visit an aunt or grandad, and share what you know with them and make an effort to do things together. There are more similarities than you might think, and more benefits than you may realise.

Yourself

And finally, what about Luke Skywalker? His journey really shapes who he is and who he becomes; you see him grow and develop. It’s the same with ourselves. Research has shown that when we care for ourselves, we are accepting of ourselves and aware of our thoughts, emotions and actions, we thrive (up to 57.5 per cent more).

Science has also shown that self-kindness is a stronger predictor of wellbeing. Examine the relationship you have with yourself: how do you talk about yourself or think about yourself, how do you treat yourself when you have made a mistake, and how open are you to receiving love, compliments and kindness from others?

How we think and feel about ourselves is just a habit that we can choose to change by noticing, opting for a more positive framing, and repeating that process.

What to sow, plant and buy in May for a successful vegetable garden

May is when the vegetable garden is readied for summer, with all your cropping plans finally set in motion with the promise of abundant, tasty produce in a few weeks.

If it has not been possible to sow seeds outdoors yet, most hardy crops will still do well if sown now; beetroot, broad beans, cabbages, calabrese, carrots, cauliflower, chard, lettuce, peas, radish, rocket, salad onions, spinach and even the rather slow-growing parsnips.

Leeks too are slow – ideally buy plants for this invaluable crop. Bulb onions move from leafy growth to swelling some time from May in response to increasing day length, and buying plants will give better results than sowing now. For pickling onions, May sowing will produce the little bulbs you need.

Sowing Brussels sprouts now will be disappointing – buy young plants for planting in late May. Garden centres offer hybrids that are more reliable than older or open-seeded cultivars.

Late May is the ideal time in most regions to sow crops for next autumn and winter harvest, including cabbages and cauliflowers with sprouting broccoli and over-winter cauliflowers for spring-cutting. Potatoes too will thrive from May planting, although the earlier planting the better.

Sweet potato slips (cuttings) are planted at the end of the month when it’s warmer. The plants don’t tuberise until days grow short in early Autumn.

If allotment holders put the word out that they are short of plants, some generally appear.

Once soil temperatures reach about 10°C – generally by mid-May in the south – French and runner beans can be sown where they are to grow. Sweetcorn too will do well sown from mid-May.

If raising plants in pots or celltrays is preferred, sow at any time before June. Generally, plants sown in their final position will grow better roots and need less watering than pot-raised ones, although there is not much in it. Potted plants, however, offer the opportunity to hoe off weeds before planting. Weeds usually peak in early June.

Cucumber family plants do well sown indoors or outdoors, but perhaps best to leave these quite sensitive seeds until mid-May for outdoor sowing: courgettes, indoor and outdoor cucumbers, squash and pumpkin. Less usual and sometimes more demanding options include luffa (eaten when very young or left to make “sponges”), melons and watermelons.

Inexpensive seed can be sown two per station, removing any surplus. Expensive F1 seed might be better sown in pots – unless slugs and bean seed fly are absent. Fleece covering on seedbeds excludes the bean seed fly and adds some warmth. Raking the soil in dry spells preceding sowing will discourage slugs.

Relatively slow-growing aubergines, peppers and tomatoes are likely to crop only briefly before winter if sown now. Productive plants are widely sold. These often have interesting properties such as being grafted for disease resistance and improved productivity or perhaps “edimentals” with some aubergines and many peppers having very attractive fruits.

Growing these on sunny patios, conservatories and even windowsills gives better crops than open ground, although cloches, coldframes and fleece can significantly improve the yields of these and other heat-loving plants. Using black pots can increase the root zone temperature, which also helps.

Gardeners itching for a real challenge can try growing okra or peanuts, although these subtropical crops really need the extra heat of a greenhouse. Other quick-growing subtropicals to try include bitter gourd and pigeon peas, used in Asian cuisine.

Confirmado fora do SXSW, Damian McCarthy é o novo rei do terror.

Meio-irmãos e O bom lugar deu a ele irmãos hilariamente maliciosos para brincar, enquanto Krampus e O Macaco o fez interpretar pais condenados.

Sinos no hotel.

E McCarthy espera.

Eu podia sentir o grito fazendo cócegas em meu peito. Meus dedos puxaram meu caderno até meu nariz. Cerrei os dentes e me recusei a cobrir os olhos, embora quisesse desesperadamente fazê-lo. E então vem a revelação. Breve, simples e ainda assim absolutamente horrível.

Inside Molly and Tom’s Love Island wedding

Finding love on Love Island is harder than the title suggests, with bombshells sent to test the strength of connections, messy recoupling ceremonies organised by producers who love drama, and the famously tricky adjustment back to the real world.

But Molly Smith and Tom Clare have managed it. After falling for each other in the 2024 All Stars series set in South Africa (and then winning the show), they became engaged in September after a romantic Dubai beach proposal, and soon, they will become the sixth Love Island couple to say “I do”.

Their August wedding is quickly approaching (although, not as quickly as Tom, 26, thinks, as he mistakenly tells me they will wed in July, before Molly, 32, jumps in with the correction), and so they are in full planning mode. “It is getting very real,” remarks Molly.

The couple, who are speaking via video call from Mallorca, where they are seeing their wedding venue for the final time before the big day, have certainly challenged themselves.

Couples spend an average of two years engaged, according to a recent study by wedding planning app Bridebook UK, but Molly and Tom are halving that. “I’m very indecisive, and I overthink, so the fact that we don’t have much time might be a blessing, because it gives me less time to change my mind,” Molly says.

They have found themselves taking stereotypical roles in the planning process. “Molly’s taken more of the lead, because these things can need a woman’s touch, but we have sat down and gone through everything to make sure we both like things,” says Tom.

Molly compares their situation with an episode of Friends in which Monica presents two options for wedding flowers to Chandler, but holds the one she wants closer to his face: there is an illusion of choice, but it isn’t real.

The only major kickback from Tom has been on the venue’s fairy lights, costing £4,000, but the bride-to-be got her way. “It was really hard for me to get past,” Tom says in a way that suggests he is still not past it.

Overcoming the price tag becomes even more difficult when Molly points out that they could probably get them off Amazon for £100. It is, therefore, some relief to Tom that Molly at least won’t be throwing her bouquet, as is a common tradition. “Keep them, they’re expensive,” he half-jokes. “I’ll be watering them for days on end.”

“The cost of a wedding can get stupid, so I can see how people can get stressed,” adds Molly, “but we’ve balanced each other out. I’m very much a worrier, and Tom is super laid-back, so he calms me down… but we do need some of my stress to get things done.”

Tom also has a plan to combat the financial challenge. “What I’ve realised is that as soon as a wedding is involved, people triple their prices. I’m going to start saying it’s a birthday.”

As for getting stressed, he is keeping things in perspective. “I want guests to have a good time, but the day is about us two. As long as you and I love it, I don’t actually care,” he tells Molly.

This is the kind of discussion they have weekly on the podcast NearlyWeds, where they candidly discuss every aspect of this life chapter, just as previous hosts Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo did leading up to their 2023 wedding. They initially found it “overwhelming” to take over the successful format, but recording day has become their favourite part of the week.

On a recent episode, prenuptial agreements were the topic of choice, and Molly outlined that she would want the air fryer, all the pans, and her Pomeranian dog, Nelly, if they were to split. While the discussion was light-hearted, Tom has now shared that he is against formally signing a contract.

“If you want a prenup, you shouldn’t be with that person. If Molly ever said she wanted one, I’d be like: ‘You’re absolutely mental’,” he states – although he quickly softens to say that he can understand if you are getting married later in life, and have a business to protect. In his own situation, “divorce isn’t an option”.

There is only one reason he could foresee a break-up: “If she cheated on me, I wouldn’t want to break up, but I would have to. That’s the one thing that we said is non-negotiable,” says Tom.

Marriage rates are continually falling; in the UK, they have nearly halved since their 1972 peak. The cost of weddings, increased acceptance of cohabitation and witnessing divorces are some reasons people cite for not wanting to put a ring on it. “People are more selective, and they are well within their rights to be,” Molly summarises.

But marriage was always on the table for this loved-up pair, with Tom explaining why in simple terms: “I want to show Mol that I’m with her throughout everything.”

It is of such importance to them that they were considering postponing their Spanish wedding when they were struggling to organise a legal ceremony in the UK. “It wouldn’t count as anything. I want us to be actually married, so it’s real,” says Tom.

Many couples do a UK civil ceremony because legal non-Catholic marriages in Spain can be complicated for non-residents. “It’s really silly to say, but in school, you don’t really get taught life skills,” says Molly. “You don’t realise things, like giving notice before marriage. I just had no idea about any of that.” Thankfully, they’ve now cracked it, and things can go as planned.

Tom is already sad at the thought of it all being over, saying life is currently going 100mph, but isn’t concerned about any rush to follow the NearlyWeds to NearlyParents pipeline that their predecessors did. “Everyone’s different, but for us, there’s not a timer on it. When it happens, it happens.”

Molly adds: “Even before we got engaged, people were commenting on when we’d have kids. People always want the next step, but we won’t feel rushed.”

I love being a step-grandparent, but sometimes I feel invisible

Having married an older man with three children, I became a step-grandparent at 44 when our own children were just 12 and 10. With many more babies to follow (ten in total) our house became a busy place for weekend breaks, mass cooking, travel cots and many changes of bedding. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

Still, there is something different about having step-kids compared to the ‘real’ things. I held a lot of babies, played in the campsite pool and read stories. But it has always been at arm’s length. The step-grandchildren called me Oggy, which I loved, but they each had their own Grandmas, so I was never expected to truly step into the role as a ‘real’ grandparent would.

This worked for me, as I just wasn’t ready. My own struggles with disturbed nights, head lice, worms and the battles of the school run were still too raw for me to take them on again. Plus, conversations about potty training and breastfeeding are really dull unless it’s your potty and your breasts. As much as I was happy to play trains and Lego on the floor with my own kids, that moment had passed, and I felt very resistant to get back down there again for someone else’s. With distance, a lot of parenting is actually quite boring.

I also knew I had no right to an opinion as I watched things being done differently from how I would have done them. All grandparents either meddle or bite their tongues over issues of food, sleep or how laissez-faire parents should be, but as a step-grandparent, it was never my right to even have a tongue to bite. I’ve built up a wonderful relationship with my stepchildren over the years, and this was not the time to risk it just to win a few points over vegetables. I controlled my meddling far more than I expect I will be able to do when my own grandkids come along.

As a step-grandparent bringing up teenagers, there were moments I felt overwhelmed and a touch resentful of all the childcare. It was a lot of work and, alongside bringing up my own kids, it sometimes left me feeling slightly invisible.

But there were also massive positives. My marriage was struggling when the step-grandchildren arrived, but the constant distraction of babies and a full house seemed to give us space to have fun again. Living with one other adult can make it easy to fall into a prolonged sulk. But all the annoying bits seemed to cancel each other out when there were lots of people around, and daily life just seemed so much easier. We were buoyed up to offer the weekend breaks for the exhausted new parents. And when they all left, we suddenly had a whole new conversation about them rather than us and the sulks lifted.

But by far the biggest benefit was to our children. As a rule, most children stop wanting to come on weekend walks, morning coffees or National Trust visits as soon as they turn into adolescents and most parents stop dragging them along as soon as they can legally leave them at home. But for ours, the treat of cute babies to cuddle or toddlers to play with seemed to win the argument pretty much every time and our extended (and ever-extending) family became the mainstay of most weekends and many holidays. That was one battle, at least, that no longer needed to be fought.

And being everyone’s favourite auntie and uncle did wonders for any teenage tensions. If our children were ever feeling unloved, hurt or having friendship issues of their own, a family visit would see them jumped upon by their many adoring nieces and nephews and within seconds, all upset would have vanished. They also got to be the grown-ups around all the little ones, which built their confidence as they taught them to swim, distracted them from tantrums and showed them how to build the best den. And they also got to be the child and just play when their own lives were becoming too grown-up.

I have loved my hands-off experience of step-grandparenting. I simply wasn’t ready to do more than I did and definitely needed the time and space to recharge my caring battery. But being part of a massive extended family has been fabulous and over the years, it has managed to smooth over the cracks of what could have been quite a sulky time.
